Bugs for Bow-Wows: The Buzz on Black Soldier Fly Larvae and Other Insect Snacks for Pets

Boy, do we love our pets-spoiling them rotten is practically a hobby. And boy, are we always in pursuit of the newest and greatest as far as pet nutrition is concerned. Say hello to the Premium Feeders Black soldier fly larvae. Yes, these little critters are making quite the buzz down the pet food aisle. But how do they really compare to the other insect foodstuffs we’re already tossing into Spike’s bowl?

You know, it used to be that picking pet food was as straightforward as reaching for and selecting a can off the shelf. Now, people are into bugs as an option. First, it was crickets-good ol’ chirpy crickets. They are sustainable, and the nutritional value? It is second to none! Crickets are full of protein and thus have managed to carve out a little niche with pet owners who tend toward the natural and eco-friendly options.

Along came mealworms, scrambling around and waving their little legs about. High in protein, high in fat-a very palatable treat for insect-consuming animals. Still, though, some pets might show their disapproval by merely sniffing at mealworms and looking for the best of the best.

Now, back to our star-the Black soldier fly larvae. Larvae of this insect are just the Swiss army knife in the insect world.

Super versatile, they’re full of calcium and balanced omega oils. That means, besides protein, these bugs are giving little Fido’s bones a boost. All paws applaud! On the sunny side, one upside for the larvae is that they are hypoallergenic; hence, they are a safe bet for sensitive-skinned or sensitive-tummied pets.

Though Black soldier fly larvae are nutritious, they tend to turn some pet owners off. Yep, the mental squirm outweighs the nutritional wiggle. But let’s not forget about how cost-effective they are: organic waste is all they need to survive, making them resource-friendly.
